Ceasefire on the Warrant
A draft of the May 20 town meeting warrant contains a petitioned article calling for an “enduring ceasefire, the unrestricted entry of life-saving humanitarian aid in Gaza, the restoration of food, water, electricity, and medical supplies to Gaza; and the release of all hostages, detainees, and political prisoners on all sides.”
The article was presented to the select board by Farrukh Najmi on March 21. “We are now in the sixth month of witnessing the immense suffering of 2.3 million people in Gaza,” he said. “This is not a political, partisan, or sectarian issue. It is a moral issue.” He said that other Mass. municipalities including Somerville, Cambridge, Amherst, Medford, Northampton, Melrose, and Greenfield have all called for an end to the fighting in Gaza.
The select board voted to recommend passage of the article, with four members in favor and one abstention by chair Barbara Carboni.
“I agree it is a moral issue,” Carboni said. “I don’t see my role as a select board member as making a recommendation to town meeting on moral issues. It’s not town business.”
A copy of the petition, if approved on May 20, will be sent to members of Wellfleet’s Congressional delegation and to President Joe Biden. —Sam Pollak
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article, published in print on April 4, erroneously reported that the select board had voted unanimously to place the ceasefire petition on the warrant. There was no such vote. Petitioned articles do not require select board action to appear on the warrant.
