What About Bob?
There he was, gently nestled in the worn-away bark of a fallen tree. The face of the figurine, which was roughly eight inches in height, looked as if it was cast directly from Norse mythology. His expression was not particularly friendly: his mouth shaped in an O, his eyebrows furrowed, his eyes wide.
Still, he captured the attention of the denizens of Wiley Park, who named him Bob, according to Cindy Nicholson, the town’s recently retired clerk, who now has time for more walks at Wiley.
Nicholson said that Bob has been a fixture in the park for years, but she noticed on March 11 that he was nowhere to be seen. In his place, an orange sign appeared: “Bring him back.”
Nicholson took to social media, posting an image of the sign and of the figurine in its lodgings before it disappeared. Dozens of residents worried over the absence of the figurine, though some admitted they had never seen the fellow at all.
Then, on March 19, a new figurine arrived in the tree trunk. Carved from a piece of wood, and with a distinctive O-shaped mouth similar to Bob’s, it stands beside a new sign reading: “Bob’s brother is now visiting.” —Olivia Oldham
