Maurice’s Planner Selected
The town has selected Studio G Architects to create the master plan team for an affordable housing development at the 21.5-acre Maurice’s Campground that the town bought in 2022. The planning committee working on the project recommended Studio G, and the select board approved that choice on March 12.
Gail Sullivan, managing principal of Studio G, will lead a team that includes JM Goldson for community engagement, Langan Engineering for site planning, and Boston Communities for financial feasibility. Sullivan is a part-time resident of Wellfleet and designed the Lawrence Hill project, which is slated to break ground later this year.
According to a press release, the Maurice’s committee received six responses to a request for proposals that was issued in October. Bids were originally due last June, but staffing issues and a lack of funding for the contract led the town to withdraw the RFP and try again after the fall town meeting.
Over the course of 15 executive sessions after the RFP’s Dec. 19 deadline, the planning committee narrowed its selection to three contenders: Studio G, Tighe & Bond, and Fuss & O’Neill.
Planning committee member Gary Sorkin said the group’s verdict “was an enthusiastically unanimous decision to recommend Studio G.”
There will be opportunities for community members to express wishes for and concerns about the project. “We hope the Wellfleet community really gets involved from the outset to make this our project,” member Sharon Rule-Agger said.
Studio G will begin work in late April, and the work is expected to take at least a year. —Sam Pollak
