A Delay for Town Meeting
The select board voted on Feb. 29 to reschedule town meeting to May 20. Even though the board has been meeting for the past several weeks to finalize the incomplete warrant, it agreed that the March 7 deadline for closing it was not feasible for a town government in the middle of a major transition.
According to a Wellfleet Community Forum announcement about the delay, interim town administrator Tom Guerino, who began working full-time on Feb. 26, needs time to review the budget and work on developing the warrant.
With the new town meeting date, the board and Guerino will have five more weeks to work on the warrant, a draft of which includes a Proposition 2½ override to fund a finance director and a $4.5-million debt exclusion to pay for a permit to dredge the harbor.
“I want a warrant we can tell the voters we are totally confident in,” said select board member Ryan Curley at the meeting.
The deadline for filing citizen petitioned articles for inclusion in the warrant has been extended to Thursday, March 21 at 5 p.m. Any such articles must have at least 10 Wellfleet residents’ signatures, along with their addresses, and the proposed article must appear at the top of each signature page. —Sam Pollak
