Town Calendar Adjustments
As town officials try to nail down the dates for special and annual town meetings this spring, other important dates are also being shuffled.
At the request of Town Clerk Elisabeth Verde, the select board voted unanimously on Feb. 13 to postpone the annual town election from May 14 to Wednesday, May 29.
“There are concerns about the amount of time we will have between town meeting and the election, particularly if town meeting takes more than one day,” Verde wrote to the board. One risk that the town would run without the delay, she wrote, would be insufficient time to print election ballots. Verde recommended postponing the election at least to May 20 but noted that it could legally be delayed until June 30.
“I think we should have the election as soon as we possibly can after the town meeting,” said the board’s vice chair, Sue Areson.
Chair Kristen Reed said her understanding was that an additional week would help staff.
“I would strongly recommend that we take the 20th and just keep the momentum from the meeting because that’s the beginning of summer as well,” said board member John Dundas. “That’s when everything kicks in, the merchants will be working, everybody is going to be going in a different direction.”
Bob Weinstein also advocated for May 20.
That date would be the earliest she could be prepared for, Verde said.
Board member Stephanie Rein pointed out that special and annual town meetings may take more days than expected.
After more discussion about the pre-Memorial Day crunch, the board voted to hold the election on May 29.
The postponed election will affect the deadline for filing nomination papers, Verde said.
On Feb. 20, Town Manager Darrin Tangeman told the Independent those amended dates still require town counsel and clerk review. They should be available “in the next few days,” he said. —Sophie Mann-Shafir
