8 Years of Roadwork?
Work on the town’s Route 6 improvement projects has begun, according to a press release on the town’s website.
Lawrence Lynch Corp., the contractor, began work on both the Route 6 pavement preservation project and the Main Street intersection project on Feb. 12.
According to the town’s announcement, initial work on Main Street will include warning sign installation, erosion control installation, and clearing and grubbing — construction parlance for tree and brush removal.
On Route 6 between the Eastham town line and Way 68, sign postings and erosion control installation will be coupled with underground or overhead utility relocation, as well as the installation of drainage infrastructure.
DPW Director Jay Norton told the Independent he does not anticipate major traffic holdups or lane closures on Main Street this winter and spring, but work on Route 6 may mean lane closures, alternating traffic lanes, and detours.
A moratorium on summer construction means that no work will be conducted between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Norton said, unless the town receives approval from the state to conduct work in June.
Construction will take place between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Route 6 pavement work is expected to be completed by fall 2026. More substantial work on the Main Street intersection project will commence this fall, with work continuing into the fall of 2031, Norton said. —Sam Pollak
