Putting a Price on Public Pickleball
The select board heard a proposal from Town Administrator Jacqui Beebe at its Dec. 4 meeting to create a special time and fee for resident and nonresident taxpayers to use the town’s public pickleball courts on Route 6.
The trendy sport has increased summertime demand for the courts dramatically, and the recreation dept. is hoping to set aside time for Eastham residents to use them, Beebe said.
The proposed fee would be $50 per year, up from no charge, though Beebe said she was flexible on the amount.
“It just seems like a lot of money to me,” chair Arthur Autorino said. He also wondered how players would be held accountable for using the court at the proper times, and he asked if they would receive a “sticker of some sort, or a fob, and when you go to the pickleball you have to show it.”
“The pickleball users will definitely call us if they see an illegal pickleball player,” Beebe replied. She said the accountability system could be incorporated into the existing work of the town employee who checks beach stickers.
The proposed schedule for residents would be three times a week: two mornings and one afternoon, including one weekend session. The board plans to consult the recreation dept. and return to the subject. —Olivia Oldham
