Ready for Anything
The first class of Citizen’s Emergency Response Team (CERT) members graduated after several weeks of training, Town Administrator Jacqui Beebe told the select board on Nov. 20. CERT is a program led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to prepare local residents to respond to disasters. The program in Eastham was organized by the town’s police dept. with support from the fire dept.
The course, which ran from Oct. 12 through Nov. 4, taught participants fire safety and utility control, “disaster psychology,” responses to terrorism, and how to support rescue operations. The 20-hour course culminated in an immersive disaster simulation.
The CERT members will now focus on running shelters and warming centers during storms, according to Beebe. They also support vaccination clinics and local summer festivals. They join a larger group of emergency preparedness teams across Cape Cod, including members of BOCH (Brewster, Orleans, Chatham, and Harwich) CERT. Across the country, there are over 2,700 CERT programs. —Olivia Oldham
