A Planning Charrette
The Eastham Community Development Dept. will host a charrette for North Eastham commercial zoning and land use planning stakeholders on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at town hall. Breakfast and lunch are included.
A charrette is a meeting where stakeholders in a project attempt to resolve conflicts and map solutions; it comes from the French word for cart, into which 19th-century Parisian architecture students would toss their work upon the arrival of a deadline. This charrette, however, is intended to reconcile the aims of the North Eastham Master Plan with those of local business owners.
The plan, first released in March of this year, outlines a vision for a village center stretching from the former site of the T-Time driving range to the Town Center Plaza. It is now in a “nuts and bolts” phase, according to Town Planner and Director of Community Development Paul Lagg. He said this means it is focused mainly on form-based zoning codes as a way to create an architectural vision for the town center and “set expectations for the town and for potential partners.”
Lagg said the Eastham Zoning Task Force, the group spearheading the charrette, wants to learn more about business owners’ long-term plans “so we can incorporate that as best we can.” Their aim is to draft final zoning plans by the end of the year. —Olivia Oldham
