Solar Enlightenment
Eastham’s climate action committee will shine a spotlight on solar power with an Oct. 28 workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Eastham Public Library, followed by a tour of existing rooftop systems on local homes from 2 to 4 p.m.
“We’ve had events where we’re speaking to the choir,” committee member Tom McNellis said while manning the climate action committee table during last week’s Windmill Weekend. The October event will be geared to residents who aren’t already sold on solar energy.
“We’re trying to bring people in who are left out of the process,” said McNellis.
The workshop will focus on helping homeowners understand the “nuts and bolts” of solar energy systems, including the types of systems that can be installed, purchasing versus leasing systems, financial options, and solar energy terminology, committee member John Boiney said during the committee’s Aug. 14 meeting.
“This isn’t just a come see some experts talking to you,” Boiney said at the August meeting. The difference is “a home tour to see the systems in action.”
The workshop will not feature solar energy system vendors or salespersons.
A representative from the Mass. Dept. of Energy Resources will also be giving a “Solar 101” presentation, said McNellis. —Linda Culhane
