Carlstrom to Meet Select Board
On July 24, the day he was supposed to join Provincetown’s select board to discuss dune shacks, sharks, and the town’s airport lease, Cape Cod National Seashore Supt. Brian Carlstrom canceled his appearance, citing scheduling conflicts.
In his email to town staff that morning, he asked to attend the Aug. 28 meeting instead — an appointment that has been confirmed, according to Town Manager Alex Morse.
Carlstrom has dismissed concerns expressed by the select board in a letter it sent him on May 22. In his response, Carlstrom said that allowing bidders to offer rents above the assessed market-rate rent of the dune shacks — a provision that critics have said could allow wealth to improperly influence the leasing of dune shacks — was standard for the Park Service and a “sound business practice.”
At its Aug. 14 meeting, the select board said that Carlstrom had been stonewalling the board, and it signed a letter asking for mediation between the Cape Cod National Seashore and the dune shack community. —Paul Benson
