ADA Planning
The Wellfleet Commission on Disabilities is seeking funds for development of a plan to bring the town into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
According to a memorandum sent to the select board by the commission, the last transition plan Wellfleet developed was in 1994, three years after the ADA was put in place. That document, the memo said, “lacks relevancy and needs updating.”
For example, commission member Kate Clemens pointed out to the select board during its Aug. 15 meeting that town board and committee Zoom meetings and their recordings are not closed captioned, limiting deaf community members from participating in town affairs.
The commission is looking to apply for a grant of $25,000 to $30,000 from the Mass. Office of Disabilities to fund costs associated with developing a transition plan.
According to ADA Coordinator Suzanne Grout Thomas, a ramp for handicapped access to the bandstand at the pier has been designed, for which the town also hopes to apply for grants to cover an estimated cost of $18,000 to $20,000.
Child Care at Town Meeting
The town will provide care for children ages three and over during the special town meeting on Monday, Sept. 18 at Wellfleet Elementary School. A sign-up form, due by Sept. 10, can be found on the town website; it must be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to “Town Meeting Childcare,” 715 Old Kings Highway, Wellfleet 02667. —Sam Pollak
