Fire and EMS Staffing
Town Manager Alex Morse told the select board that the town would hire another eight EMTs or medics in the next few weeks, due to the Lower Cape Ambulance Association’s announcement that it will close its doors on Aug. 31.
Morse said the town had already extended a few offers to candidates who had interviewed in the last round of hiring, and that he expected some of them would be on duty by Sept. 1. “We’re confident we can move expeditiously to bring more staff on board,” Morse said.
Morse also said that the money that had been slated to pay LCAA’s contract, plus the ambulance fees it had been expected to take in, would be enough to pay the eight new personnel.
“Another result of this transition is that the Town will begin collecting ambulance revenue for the first time,” Morse wrote in his memo to the board. “We anticipate around $800,000 in revenue.” The town will contract with Coastal Medical Billing, the same company that currently manages billing for LCAA. —Paul Benson
