The Cooks Brook Saga Continues
From July 8 to 21, Cooks Brook Beach on the Cape Cod Bay side of town closed for unusual bacterial exceedances that failed the geomean water quality standard. It finally reopened — only to close again on Sunday, July 30. South Sunken Meadow Beach was also closed for high levels of bacteria.
Both beaches failed their weekly single-sample inspections on July 27, meaning that enterococci bacteria were present at a rate higher than 104 colonies per 100 ml. of water. The results of follow-up testing conducted on July 31 had not been released, and county officials could not be reached for comment as of press time.
Last week, the Independent reported that town officials believed that the situation at Cooks Brook Beach is linked to newly exposed peat on the beach floor that created a fertile environment for bacteria to flourish. Eastham Health Director Hillary Greenberg-Lemos said she thought the bacteria had washed itself out.
