$15M for Stellwagen Center
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced on Aug. 1 that $15 million from the Inflation Reduction Act will be spent on the new Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary visitor center, which will be located on part of the MacMillan Pier parking lot.
“Together with our community partners, we will create an educational resource for all ages, and a hub that offers inspiration for generations to come on the wonders of the ocean,” said Pete DeCola, superintendent of the Stellwagen Bank sanctuary in the agency’s press release.
“We have long envisioned a visitor center here in Provincetown where we could share with the public our ocean and coastal research,” said Center for Coastal Studies Executive Director Rich Delaney in the same press release.
The $15 million is part of a $3.3-billion allocation that NOAA received from the Inflation Reduction Act.
The visitor center will be made of flood-resistant materials and will be elevated “well above minimum requirements” according to the press release. There will be electric vehicle charging stations for cars parked underneath the building. —Paul Benson
