Wiley Park Regulations Tabled
After a contentious two-month process, the conservation commission has officially decided to table proposed rule changes for town-owned land, including a June 15-to-Labor Day leash law for dogs in Wiley Park, until the fall. In the meantime, the commission is going ahead with plans for a summer survey to fully assess damage from foot and paw traffic in the park.
At a June 13 meeting, where the commission was scheduled to discuss the regulations, Eastham Dog Owners’ Association President Tracey Plantier spoke against regulations in conservation areas. “Just let people enjoy them and don’t try to put so many rules in place,” she said.
Conservation commission Vice Chair Janet Benjamins responded, “We’re concerned with everyone being able to enjoy it. There have been instances where dogs have not been under voice control, not on a leash, and where people, including children, have become frightened.
“That is why we’re discussing this,” she said.
The members of the commission all said they were in favor of waiting to vote on the regulations until data from the survey were gathered. —Amelia Roth-Dishy
