Designing Shank Painter Road
Engineers from the state Dept. of Transportation will present the “25 percent design” of the Shank Painter Road Improvement Project at town hall on Tuesday, June 13.
The Shank Painter Project applies “complete streets” design to the roadway, meaning there will be bicycle lanes, proper sidewalks, and street trees. The intersection of Shank Painter Road and Route 6 will be replaced with a roundabout. The project also includes a “road diet” for Route 6 that will remove the two lanes closest to town from Shank Painter Road all the way to Herring Cove.
The former roadbed will become a shared-use bicycle and pedestrian path, while traffic between the roundabout and Herring Cove will share the two lanes closer to the Province Lands.
According to the state’s listing for the event, “All views and comments submitted in response to the hearing will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.” —Paul Benson
