Conversation Starters
Slow Start for the Night Bus
According to the town manager’s report to the select board on May 22, during the first weekend of expanded early morning and late night bus service between Provincetown and Eastham, the four additional trips that were added for May 5, 6, and 7 served 20 riders.
The following weekend, the extra 12 bus trips served 19 riders.
On May 22, the early morning and late night buses began running seven days a week. The town has asked local businesses to help get the word out to their employees about the expanded service hours.
Manager Merit
Last year, the town manager’s first-ever performance review by the select board was a contentious process. All five select board members scored Alex Morse across 10 performance categories and nine objectives, and while the numbers were generally favorable, there were just enough low marks to produce a “meets expectations” score — which translated to a 2.5-percent “merit pay” increase.
After some blistering public comments and a sharp debate, the select board ultimately voted to award the town manager a 4-percent increase, which corresponded to the “exceeds expectations” score.
This year, the process was much smoother — in fact, it took less than six minutes. The select board used a new form designed by human resources consultant and Provincetown resident Earl Hinton, who also helped with last year’s town staff compensation study.
The town manager’s scores came out to “exceeds expectations” and a 4.5-percent merit pay increase. The last act of the outgoing select board on May 8 was to unanimously approve that score and pay raise. —Paul Benson
