Monica Kraft Is Honored
At the select board’s April 11 meeting, members voted to grant the first annual Fred Todd Community Service Award to Town Moderator Monica Kraft.
The select board created the award in February in honor of Fred Todd, who died last year. Todd, a long-time Truro resident, attended Truro Central School and as an adult planned the town’s Puma Park, built Habitat for Humanity houses locally, and was a member of the zoning board of appeals.
The two other nominees for the award were ZBA chair Art Hultin and cemetery commission treasurer Bob Masson.
When the select board struggled to choose just one winner, clerk John Dundas, the point person for the award, said he wanted to honor all three. “Each of the nominees exemplifies exactly what the intent is behind this community service award,” he said.
But his colleagues worried about the implications of honoring everyone who was nominated.
“I think it dilutes the value of the award a little bit,” said Stephanie Rein.
Sue Areson leaned toward Hultin, citing the time he spent working with Todd. “There’s a certain synergy to giving this award to someone who served very closely with Fred Todd,” said Areson.
Chair Kristen Reed expressed support for Kraft. “Monica has been serving Truro for 50 years,” she said, noting that Kraft had been the first woman elected to the select board.
Select board vice chair Bob Weinstein, who is married to Kraft, did not vote.
“I helped Monica campaign in 1984,” Weinstein said, the year Kraft was elected to what was then called the board of selectmen. “Monica really set the tone for opening it up to the faces of women that I see in front of me this evening and who populate many other boards and committees in this town,” he said.
All three nominees will be acknowledged at town meeting on April 25. —Sophie Mann-Shafir
