Select Board Wants a Working Group
At the April 10 select board meeting, at least four members were strongly in favor of setting up some kind of working group to examine issues of year-round housing in town, including the proposals to regulate short-term rentals that were defeated at a contentious town meeting the week before.
Members Leslie Sandberg, Louise Venden, and Bobby Anthony and chair Dave Abramson vigorously debated how such a group should be structured and how to go about creating it — but all four said it would be important to get diverse constituencies together and try to reach a consensus.
The charge or scope of any working group was also debated. Venden argued for a broad mission that could look at ownership opportunities as well as rental housing, while Sandberg said that a tightly defined scope would help prevent “mission creep” and loss of focus.
“Now is the time to get it together,” Anthony insisted, “so we’re ready for a fall town meeting.”
A working group was not on the official agenda for the April 10 meeting, and the board did not take a vote. The matter seemed likely to appear on the agenda for the board’s next meeting on April 24. —Paul Benson
