Conversation Starter
Year-Round Housing
On March 27 the select board discussed whether to create a working group or special meeting format to develop strategies to increase year-round housing in town, including examining the impact of short-term rentals. They did not come to a decision that night, however.
Chair Dave Abramson suggested that the select board, community housing council, Year-Round Market-Rate Rental Housing Trust, and planning board meet quarterly to discuss new ideas.
Select board member Leslie Sandberg said she wanted to see a nonvoting group, with perhaps one person from each of those committees, and more community members included.
“We don’t have to figure this out tonight, but I want to see something where people who are housing insecure are participating,” Sandberg said. “Not just giving public comment — they are in the group.”
Sandberg said that small business owners, real estate brokers, and people in the tourism industry should be included as well. “We are going into town meeting divided,” Sandberg said, “and that could have been avoided if people had come together and were talking.”
Town Manager Alex Morse said that town meeting had already passed many important housing programs but there was more work to be done.
“I think town meeting needs to know that the select board talked about convening stakeholders and community members,” Morse said, “and there’s a commitment to keeping this conversation going and coming back with more specifics.” —Paul Benson
