Get Vaxxed and Get $75
Outer Cape residents have a new reason to get a Covid-19 vaccine or booster — a $75 gift card to Stop & Shop or Cumberland Farms at clinics in Eastham and Wellfleet in March.
The shots will be offered on Thursday, March 16 at Eastham Town Hall from 3 to 6 p.m.; Tuesday, March 21 at the 246 Kitchen at the Methodist Church in Wellfleet from 5 to 7 p.m; and Friday, March 24 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Eastham Public Library. Walk-ins are welcome.
The Mass. Dept. of Public Health selected the Outer Cape as one of 14 rural communities to participate in the Rural Vaccine Program. The reasons: demographic makeup, geography, and limited infrastructure make health care delivery harder in isolated places and this contributes to “higher burdens of chronic disease, which can increase Covid-19 morbidity and mortality.
“Extreme isolation, due to both geographic barriers (mountains, reservoirs, rivers) and limited infrastructure (transportation, broadband, social and clinical services), have exacerbated these challenges, as has a historical mistrust of government among some rural communities,” according to the DPH.
Alex Nelson, coordinator of the Outer Cape Community Solutions Network, said the state offered gift cards to grocery or big box stores. She asked that all the cards for the Outer Cape be for Stop & Shop and Cumberland Farms for those with limited transportation. —K.C. Myers
