Conversation Starters
Special Ed and Civil Rights Review
The Nauset school district will undergo an every-three-year review conducted by the state’s Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education during the week of Feb. 27. Officials from the DESE’s Office of Public School Monitoring will visit the schools to check their compliance with special education (including determination of eligibility and IEPs) and civil rights (including bullying and equal access) regulations.
The DESE is also seeking parent input, according to an announcement from the district posted on the town website’s meetings calendar for the week.
Parents and others may call Henry Ndakalu, public school monitoring chair, at 781-338-3706 to request a telephone interview. Parents of students with disabilities should be receiving an online survey about their children’s experiences.
Within 60 days of the visit, DESE will produce a review for the district and the public.
Seasonal Vessel Storage
It’s time to think about where you most want to put your canoe this season. The town’s lottery for vessel storage spaces at Hemenway Landing, Great Pond, Boat Meadow, Salt Pond, and Sunken Meadow is open until March 15. Details and the application are on the home page of the town’s website at eastham-ma.gov.
Participants may apply for a primary location of interest and an alternate. Only those chosen in the lottery may apply for annual permits to store their small watercraft in designated spaces on town property. Storage is permitted only between April 16 and Nov. 14.
These are spaces for watercraft under 12 feet long (except canoes, kayaks, wind surfers, and paddle boards). There is a limit on storage permits of two vessels per household. Permits are $50. —Teresa Parker
