Nauset High Gym Closes After 51 Years
The girls basketball players will be the last to scuff the Nauset Regional High School’s hardwood floors. Their junior varsity and varsity games on Friday, Feb. 17 will end 51 years of play in the gym.
The Nauset High School renovation project begins over this winter break, Feb. 20 to 24. Students will return to a rearranged school. The athletic director’s office, trainer’s office, and weight room will be moved into the auditorium area, said Athletic Director John Mattson. The boys basketball team, which made the playoffs, will practice in the Nauset Regional Middle School in Orleans until the end of the season.
The next year will be a nomadic one for the indoor sports teams. Volleyball will practice and play at the middle school gym in the fall. Winter sports will take place at the middle school and the elementary schools in the district, Mattson said.
Games held on outdoor fields won’t be affected by the construction, although players must make do with temporary changing rooms in the auditorium area because there will be no locker rooms. The closure may last only through next winter, Mattson said.
The gym is being rebuilt as part of a $169.1-million renovation and reconstruction of the high school, which is scheduled to be finished by fall of 2025. —K.C. Myers
