BARNSTABLE — Cape Cod Community College will host the first stop of a statewide “listening tour” on gun safety at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9. State Rep. Michael S. Day, who chairs the Joint Committee on the Judiciary, is spearheading the tour as part of a review of the state’s gun laws.
The event will bring together legislators, medical professionals, and law enforcement officers in a panel discussion about guns and suicide, according to a press release from Day’s office. The number of suicides in Barnstable County increased by 48 percent in 2020.
“This mental health crisis,” Day said in a statement, “requires us to consider how our mental health systems intersect with our laws and our public safety resources.”
The Feb. 9 discussion will take place in the college’s Tilden Auditorium.
