Shellfish Grant Lottery
The shellfish dept. and select board have announced the availability of two shellfish grant licenses, #95-15 and #95-16, located on the southern deep-water end of Egg Island.
Applications for the grants can be found on the shellfish dept.’s webpage; printed versions are available at the department office on the pier. The application deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 8 a.m.
Applicants must live in Wellfleet and have held a commercial shellfishing permit for at least three of the four calendar years preceding the application or have at least three years of experience in Wellfleet aquaculture. The application requires copies of catch reports filed with the state or a letter from a former employer and license holder describing the applicant’s experience. Applicants must also present a detailed five-year business plan for how she or he intends to use the grant, including shellfish species, amounts and sizes, gear, and access routes.
The grants will be awarded to qualified applicants by a public lottery to be held at the select board’s meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
Both grants cannot be awarded to one person. If the winner of the first lottery, for #95-15, has applied for both, his or her name will be removed from the lottery for #95-16, which will be conducted second.
Both 0.92-acre grants ebb out only on extreme low tides and therefore can be accessed only by boat or on foot, according to the posting. Grant #95-16 has never been used.
The Dec. 20 lottery will be the first shellfish lottery in Wellfleet since 2018; that lottery was the first in 18 years. —Sam Pollak
