Dune Project Gets State Funding
Provincetown has received an $80,355 grant from the state to help fund the final design, construction specifications, and a monitoring and maintenance plan for the Ryder Street dune, which is to be built on the Ryder Street beach just west of the Provincetown Marina and Municipal Parking Lot.
This area was the pathway for significant saltwater flooding in the winter of 2018 when an extreme low-pressure storm coincided with high tide on January 4. Seawater flowed over the beach and down Gosnold Street all the way to Bradford Street, where it formed an immense pool that flooded dozens of homes and businesses.
The new dune is designed to block the low-lying path that the floodwaters took that day. It will be about seven feet tall and run roughly from the Nine Ryder Restaurant to the rear of the Crown & Anchor.
In the four winters since the town began the lengthy process of fortifying this stretch of coast, the Dept. of Public Works has also installed a smaller berm about three feet high to keep floodwaters from reaching Gosnold Street. —Paul Benson
