Sheriff and D.A. Forum Sept. 23
With both the Barnstable County sheriff and the district attorney positions open and contested for the first time in two decades, the halls of justice on Cape Cod could be on the cusp of major change.
Wellfleet resident Mark Gabriele has organized a panel discussion with the Democratic challengers for these positions. It will be held on Friday, Sept. 23 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Eastham Public Library and on Zoom. Invitations are available by emailing [email protected].
Donna Buckley, the former general counsel for the sheriff’s office, is running against Republican state Rep. Tim Whelan for sheriff. She will answer questions from panelists and audience members. So will Rob Galibois, a criminal defense attorney running for district attorney, the office now held by Michael O’Keefe. Galibois faces Republican challenger Daniel Higgins on Nov. 7.
The panelists will ask Galibois and Buckley what they will do to address the causes of crime in the county. Gabriele said Wellfleet and Eastham crime is almost all minor. He said Wellfleet Police Chief Michael Hurley has told him mental health calls keep his department busier than anything else. Statistics indicate the vast majority of inmates in the Barnstable Correctional Facility suffer from substance abuse disorders.
When it comes to crime, Gabriele said, “It just seems to me instead of dealing with the symptoms, you need to deal with the causes. I would like to hear their specific plans for this.” —K.C. Myers
