Sept. 11 Remembrance
Firefighters, police officers, and anyone else who would like to take a moment to remember the lives lost in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 are invited to a traffic-stopping ceremony on Shank Painter Road at 8 a.m. Sunday.
Each year on Sept. 11, the Provincetown police close the part of Shank Painter Road between the fire and police stations for the ceremony, said Jim Keefe, who organized the event. “It is that important,” Keefe said.
Members of the U.S. Coast Guard and Provincetown police and firefighters will serve as the honor and color guards. The Rev. Edgar Miranda of the United Methodist Church will give opening prayers. Sgt. Chris Landry will read a Policeman’s Prayer, and Fire Captain E.J. Martinez will read the Firefighter’s Prayer. Denise Russell will sing two patriotic songs and play “Taps” on the bugle.
Of the 2,753 people killed in the attack at the World Trade Centers, 343 were firefighters and paramedics, 23 were New York City police officers, and 37 were Port Authority police officers, according to the 9/11 Commission. —K.C. Myers.
