Spotter Plane to Join Swim for Life
A spotter plane will watch over the 35th Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla on Sept. 10.
The nonprofit Cape Cod Ocean Community is sponsoring the plane, which will fly above Provincetown Harbor while swimmers follow the sweeping arm of the East End shoreline for 1.2 miles.
The organization’s surveillance program places volunteers on beaches with radios that monitor a dedicated frequency used by other volunteers in the sky to report shark sightings, according to an announcement from Swim organizer Jay Critchley. The program uses a network of commercial and private planes. During the Swim, spotter planes will be working directly with the Provincetown harbormaster.
The Swim starts at 11 a.m. at the beach in front of the Breakwater and Harbor hotels at 716 Commercial St.
Formerly, the swim started at Long Point and crossed the harbor. The shoreline route, new last year, allows swimmers who were unable to swim across the harbor to participate. A parallel Swim will be held at Great Pond in Wellfleet at 8 a.m.
The swim is a fundraiser for the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, Helping Our Women, Outer Cape Health Services, Provincetown Rescue Squad Association, Lower Cape Ambulance Association, Soup Kitchen in Provincetown, Provincetown Schools, the Compact Community Fund, Accessible Provincetown, West End Racing Children’s Community Sailing, Cape Cod Children’s Place, and Native Land Conservancy.
