Conversation Starters
Two Depts., One Director
Town Manager Darrin Tangeman presented a plan to reorganize the council on aging (COA) and recreation and beach departments in a move he says will provide better collaboration between them. He explained the plan at the June 28 select board meeting.
Previously, the COA and recreation departments each had their own directors and assistant directors but shared an office assistant. In the model presented on June 28, a single community service director would oversee both departments. Each department would have its own assistant director.
The community service director would concentrate on administrative requirements, work with various boards, handle staffing, and identify the common needs of both departments. The assistant directors would work more directly with the community to implement and expand programming. The assistant directors would support each other in respectively quieter times of the year, Tangeman said.
Tangeman pointed to other communities that have adopted this configuration, including Wellfleet, Barnstable, and Chatham.
The reconfiguration eliminates one full-time position. But Tangeman is proposing creation of a new job, a marketing and communications specialist, who would communicate Truro’s various programs and services to the public.
Three positions, assistant community services director for the recreation department, assistant community services director for the COA, and marketing and communications specialist, are currently being advertised. Starting salaries for the jobs are $69,575, $69,575, and $63,250, respectively. To apply, visit truro-ma.gov/jobs. —Nora Markey
