Assessing Health Needs
The Provincetown, Truro, and Wellfleet health depts. are conducting a survey to determine how effective the public health programs are in each town. The survey, which was launched in April, asks participants questions about “economic, health, and social factors shaping resident lives in these communities,” according to the survey’s introduction.
The health depts. have received 845 responses so far, which is less than half of the 20-percent response rate required for the findings to be statistically significant. “We’re struggling to get more participants,” said Hillary Greenburg-Lemos, Wellfleet’s health and conservation agent.
The survey is important because it gives health officials information required to develop programs and secure funding to improve health outcomes, according to Emily Beebe, the health and conservation agent for Truro. For example, the survey attempts to collect data on obstacles to health care that could be used to improve it.
The survey is available electronically on each town’s website and through QR codes posted in all public buildings. There are also paper copies in public libraries and community centers. —Emma Madgic
