Town Meeting Tune-Up
Provincetown will be the first Outer Cape town to hold its annual town meeting on Monday, April 4 at town hall. After two years of trimming warrant articles to shorten pandemic-inspired outdoor meetings, the town expects this meeting to be a big one.
Forty-eight articles appear in the 50-page warrant. If you want a preview, Monday, March 14 will be a good day to tune in to board and committee meetings to hear what officials have to say about some financial articles.
The finance committee will review the proposed budget at 7 p.m. with the select board. The town’s recommended fiscal 2023 operating budget is $32 million, up 4.4 percent from the current year.
Voters must also decide on a proposed debt exclusion of $8.5 million to construct a new police station. Because it exceeds the limits of Proposition 2½, it must also be approved at town election on May 10. A story on Page A1 goes into more detail.
At 3 p.m., the public landscape committee will discuss its recommendation on the proposed landscaping and other amenities at the East End Waterfront Park, also called Cannery Wharf Park, at 387 Commercial St. The town bought this former parking lot in 2019 from Elena Hall before her death. Article 8 on the warrant will ask voters for $1.8 million to landscape the area and construct a seawall, pathways, bike racks, and other features. This project must also be approved at the election as a debt exclusion.
The last day to register to vote at town meeting is March 15. Voters must register for the election by April 20. —K.C. Myers
