Eversource and Salt Marshes
With the Eagle Neck Creek salt marsh restoration initiative and culvert replacement project underway on Old County Road, Eversource will have to scoot out of the way. The project was approved by a unanimous vote of the select board. The company must remove and replace two of its poles and raise its aerial cables and terminals, structures that are responsible for delivering electricity as well as both Comcast and Verizon services. Abutters to the project were notified by mail on Jan. 6.
The power lines currently hang “too low,” said Jarrod Cabral, the DPW director, at the Jan. 25 select board meeting. The material needed for the culvert replacement — which includes steel sheeting — will not fit in the location, given the constraints currently imposed by Eversource’s infrastructure.
Seventy-five percent of the cost of the project is covered by a grant awarded by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. The town is responsible for the remaining 25 percent, which was authorized at the 2019 annual town meeting. —Jasmine Lu
