Vaunted Vault
On Jan. 5, the community preservation committee approved Town Clerk Cindy Nicholson’s request for $45,000 to create a new climate-controlled and secure room to replace the vault at town hall.
The vault has had humidity problems and has a flat roof, which has made it prone to flooding in the past.
“What we discovered is that vaults are great if you want something secure like a home safe,” said Town Administrator Jacqui Beebe. “If you want to secure something like a historic record, vaults just stink at it. They just don’t work, because there’s no air circulation.”
The funds, which must be approved at town meeting, would pay for a climate control unit, shelving, and a data logger to keep track of the temperature and humidity.
The town’s archives and important documents will be placed in a room under Beebe’s office.
Many of the town’s archives are temporarily in Boston, being digitized. That project is using funds from the Ed Harnett Trust Fund. Nicholson is picking them up Monday but has no space in town hall to put them. For the time being, they will be stored at the library.
After the affirmative vote, Nicholson said appreciatively, “I will sleep tonight.”
“Just not in the vault!” said committee chair Dan Coppelman. —Cam Blair
