This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Dec. 14 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

American Bitterns are a hard-to-spot, stripey, brown and buff-colored kind of heron. They live amid tall marsh vegetation, where they stalk fish, frogs, and insects. In spring, “their odd booming calls sound like the gulps of a thirsty giant,” say the people at Cornell Lab of Ornithology. (Photo Chrissy McClerran)

At Race Point in Provincetown, sightings this week included a Sooty Shearwater, 23 Common Murres, 600 Razorbills, 30 Black-Legged Kittiwakes, and 5 Iceland Gulls.

A Semipalmated Plover was seen at Wellfleet Bay sanctuary.

2 American Bitterns were seen in Eastham. And Baltimore Orioles (apparently nobody counted) were also in town this week.
