Time to Pick a Leader
If you want to help steer the town government forward, consider joining the town administrator screening committee.
The select board has put out the call for seven members to be on the committee that will review resumes and ultimately recommend three to five finalists to the select board. The select board will appoint the committee. The entire hiring process is expected to take several months. It may be complete by January, according to Charlie Sumner, the interim town administrator.
The committee will be charged with holding a community forum to gauge ideas and opinions on the necessary attributes of the town administrator, according to the select board’s announcement. The select board members have not yet decided if they will hire a headhunter to lead the process of writing the job description, advertising the position, and then doing the fact-checking and verification of applicants’ resumes.
Usually, Wellfleet, like most towns, does hire a consultant when searching for a new town administrator. But doing so did not help when the town hired Community Paradigm Associates and the select board picked Maria Broadbent in 2020. She lasted only nine months before the select board bought her out of her three-year contract. Broadbent presided over serious problems in the accounting department during her short tenure and faced an open rebellion by town department heads. Both she and the town accountant she hired resigned in April. Many department heads complained publicly that Broadbent failed to present accurate budget figures when creating the 2022 operating budget. The resulting problems are still being worked on. —K.C.
