We Tell Ourselves Stories
The Wellfleet Housing Committees will host an event at Preservation Hall at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 11 at which local storytellers can tell about “the challenges and joys of finding home in Wellfleet.” The event is called “Housing Angels in Story & Song” and will be co-hosted by Stephen Russell and Vanessa Vartabedian, with musical accompaniment by several Outer Cape musicians. A flyer for the event explains that the intent of the event is “community awareness-raising.”
Vartabedian, who runs the weekly Mosquito Story Slam on the Outer Cape, said that the theme for the night — “finding home” — can be broadly defined, but for this event, it is specific to Wellfleet.
“A good story means a lot of things,” she said. “It has to do with what was at stake for the storyteller in finding a home — and let’s not forget, home is vital not just for basic survival but for thriving in life. It’s how you settle in and find community.”
Vartabedian said those interested in sharing their Wellfleet housing stories should contact Wellfleet Preservation Hall at 508-349-1800. —Paul Sullivan
