Fireworks and Wildlife
Board of health chair Joanna Buffington reminded everyone at the board’s June 24 meeting of the dangers of fireworks to both humans and animals.
“July 4th is coming up and we’ve already had 30 citations for fireworks being fired off,” said Buffington. “They are dangerous. I know somebody that blew off a finger. They seriously disrupt our wildlife.”
She noted that shorebirds currently nesting include willets along First Encounter Beach.
Fireworks, Buffington said, “are awful if you have pets.” She added that fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts.
“If you have friends or family who have purchased them legally in other states and are coming to visit, please ask them to leave the fireworks at home,” said Buffington. —Linda Culhane
