Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, June 1 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
Mississippi Kites were reported in Truro this week, while the Swallow-Tailed Kites apparently preferred Eastham.
A Rose-Breasted Grosbeak and Black-Throated Blue Warbler were reported at Wellfleet Bay sanctuary.
An extraordinary assortment and number of seabirds passed Race Point in Provincetown during the three-day storm, including the third state record for White-Winged Terns and a remarkable count of 450 Arctic Terns. Other sightings included a Pacific Loon, a Red-Necked Grebe, a Red Phalarope, a Pomarine Jaeger, 24 Parasitic Jaegers, 2 Long-Tailed Jaegers, a Black Guillemot, 3 Common Murres, 5 Atlantic Puffins, a Sabine’s Gull, 750 Bonaparte’s Gulls, 4 Little Gulls, 5 Lesser Black-Backed Gulls, a Black Tern, 8 Roseate Terns, 2,500 Common Terns, 12 Wilson’s and 7 Leach’s Storm-Petrels, 66 Northern Fulmars, 12 Sooty and 16 Manx Shearwaters, and 500 Northern Gannets.
