This Week’s Bird Sightings

Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, May 25 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Sora’s bright yellow bill looks like “candy corn,” according to the folks at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. They continue, “The Sora walks slowly through shallow wetlands a bit like a chicken that has had too much coffee.” (Photo Becky Matsubara)

Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included 2 Black Guillemots, 2 Little Gulls, 400 Bonaparte’s Gulls, 2 Lesser Black-Backed Gulls, a Glaucous Gull, 1,200 Common Terns, and 11 Manx Shearwaters. Elsewhere in town, 3 Pine Siskins were seen.

A Wilson’s Phalarope and a Sora were found at Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay sanctuary this week.

Little Blue Herons were seen in Eastham this week; we don’t know how many.
