Confirmed bird sightings on the Outer Cape in the week preceding the Independent’s deadline on Tuesday, Feb. 23 included the following, based on a report prepared by Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
That Tufted Duck was still hanging around at Great Pond in Eastham this week, where 43 Ruddy Ducks and 3 Bald Eagles were also seen.
A male Painted Bunting is visiting a feeder in Eastham, where it has been present off and on since November.
A Hoary Redpoll and 210 Common Redpolls were seen in South Wellfleet, and 2 Evening Grosbeaks in Wellfleet.
Sightings at Race Point in Provincetown included a Pacific Loon, an Atlantic Puffin, a Harlequin Duck, 2 Dovekies, 13 Common Murres, a Thick-Billed Murre, a Black Guillemot, 16 Iceland Gulls, a Snowy Owl, and at least 5 North Atlantic Right Whales.
Strangely, nobody in Truro saw a single bird all week.
