Covid-19 Update
As of Sept. 22, there were zero cases of Covid-19 in Provincetown, 32 cases considered recovered, and one death.
Asymptomatic Testing for School Staff
The health dept. staff will offer an “affordable and easy” test of asymptomatic employees of the Provincetown and Truro schools for Covid-19. This is a repeat of a successful Aug. 20 pilot program in which Lower Cape Ambulance Services and the Provincetown Health Dept. tested more than 100 municipal and school employees, all of them asymptomatic.
The results came back in only 48 hours and the tests cost only about $70 a person, as opposed to tests that earlier in the summer cost about $150. The lower cost and faster turnaround time were made possible through a partnership between the Cambridge Innovation Center and the Broad Institute, according to Morgan Clark, Provincetown’s health director.
This next round of tests for school staff is in preparation for when schools open for in-person learning. Truro Central School is scheduled to open Sept. 28. Provincetown Schools Supt. Suzanne Scallion has not announced a reopening date, though she said two weeks ago that outdoor classes may begin on Oct. 5.
The date and time of the schools’ staff test has not been made public, though the health depts. do want the public to know this is planned, the spokesperson Leslie Sandberg said in an email.
Any resident of Massachusetts can attend a “Stop the Spread” test site for a free test; the closest site is in New Bedford. Otherwise, asymptomatic testing is difficult to arrange, according to the announcement from the Provincetown Health Dept.
