Conversation Starters
Covid-19 Update
As of June 29, Wellfleet had zero active cases, six cleared cases, and one death as a result of the coronavirus.
New Emergency Rental Assistance
The Wellfleet Housing Authority will discuss creation of a new emergency rental assistance fund at its Thursday, July 2, meeting. The program would be a partnership with the Eastham-based nonprofit Community Development Partnership. The goal is to help Wellfleet renters who have lost income because of Covid-19, according to Housing Authority Chair Elaine Mcllroy.
The town has had a rental support program for over a decade, to which low-income renters can apply for a subsidy to help pay their rent. The new emergency fund is tailored explicitly to address financial damage done by the virus. The housing authority will meet at 10 a.m. to discuss the details of a grant application to make the program possible.
Fireworks Warning
The Wellfleet Police Dept. will be posting a fireworks warning on its social media pages this week. Chief Mike Hurley wants to get the word out that setting off fireworks without a permit is not only illegal but dangerous. The police and fire depts. already deal with a higher call volume during the July 4 week because of the holiday crowds, so Hurley wants to douse ambitions about setting off illegal fireworks. —Devin Sean Martin
