TRURO — Vietnam veteran, peace activist, construction worker, and farmer John Hopkins died on April 23, 2020, at Hospital CIMA in San Jose, Costa Rica. He was 72.
Hopkins, who owned Augustus Construction in Truro for about 40 years, was a survivor of kidney and brain cancer. He had gone to Costa Rica to do yoga and boost his immune system when on Feb. 14 he suffered internal injuries while body surfing. He spent weeks at Hospital CIMA, as a campaign run by friends and family raised over $37,000 to help pay his medical bills.
Hopkins had been scheduled to come home weeks ago, to continue his recovery at Cape Cod Hospital, his sister-in-law Julie Gesin said. But those plans were delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.
A complete obituary will appear in next week’s edition.
