In 1621, the year of the proverbial first Thanksgiving, and one year after the Pilgrims landed in Provincetown, Jupiter, the planet of purpose and of plenty, was in communicative air sign Gemini, ruled by adaptable Mercury. Mercury, meanwhile, was in Jupiter’s home sign, Sagittarius, which is directly opposite Gemini in the zodiac.
Gemini encompasses the concepts of sharing and generosity, while Sagittarius is about exploration and culture. This particularly well-balanced polarity made positive, productive partnership possible for the Pilgrims and their native allies, the Wampanoag and the Nauset. In fact, the alliance lasted for 50 years.
That first feast took place just after the autumn harvest. Now that it’s set in November, we celebrate it when the Sun is in Sagittarius. Thanksgiving, then, is ruled by Jupiter. This year, gift-bearing Jupiter is in air sign Aquarius, the sign of idealism and connectedness. Jupiter in Aquarius amplifies barrier-breaking and bringing together diverse people and ideas — much like that first Thanksgiving, but with a greater emphasis on fairness and justice.
Taking a walk around Provincetown, you might notice the names of those original colonists on our street signs, taverns, and inns: Bradford, Standish, Carver, Winslow. We even have a 252-foot-tall monument to commemorate the landing of the Pilgrims and the signing of the Mayflower Compact. What’s missing, however, are the names of their Indigenous neighbors who, sensing the opportunity for alliance — and protection from the nearby Narragansett tribe — kept the colonists from starving.
In the spirit of Jupiter in Aquarius, and so of out-of-the-box thinking, I suggest it might be time for Provincetown to start renaming streets, parks, and buildings to reflect the importance of the Indigenous people who made New England possible. Outer Cape Cod is Wampanoag-Nauset land.
