The history of Aries, which begins the zodiacal year, as a symbol of creation and sacrifice extends thousands of years into the past. The constellation of Aries (not to be confused with Ares, the Greek god of war) was ascribed the form of a ram in many ancient cultures. In Egypt, the ram — associated with the god Amun — was worshiped both for its fertility and for its warlike nature.
In Genesis, Abraham sacrifices a ram instead of killing his son Isaac. This story is similar to the Greek tale of the golden ram saving Phrixos from being sacrificed by his own father, who then sacrificed the ram to Zeus in return for saving his life. The ram was also an ancient symbol of Christ, who himself was also sacrificed, so the story goes.
Given that the ram is a procreative and powerful creature, it’s no wonder it became the trendiest animal to sacrifice to the gods of yore. In most cultures, making symbolic offerings to assuage moody deities was a normal part of life. Even the season of Lent ends while the sun is in Aries.
As the new zodiacal year gains steam, what are you willing to give up? What things can you sacrifice to create space for new growth? Are they emotional? Physical? Relational? Material? It’s up to you. Whatever it is, let it go with a blessing. The nature of life is to reward sacrifice with transformation.
