At Home With Geometry and Light

The art of Grace and Budd Hopkins in a space by Charlie Zehnder

Grace Hopkins and her daughter Gigi moved to Wellfleet from Portland, Maine in 2012 after the death of Grace’s father, the artist Budd Hopkins, one of the founders of the Long Point Gallery in Provincetown. Settling into the family’s summer house, built in 1977 by Charlie Zehnder, they faced the challenge of where to display art in the sunlit space.

Both Budd’s and Grace’s collections are hung in a hallway off the stairwell, one of the few places in the house unreached by natural light from windows or skylights. Their own colorful abstract works, also in the mix, echo the geometric forms and contrasting textures of the house. “Both Dad’s work and mine are shaped by the juxtaposition of rough and smooth,” says Hopkins. Bare tree branches in the January landscape complement the lines and colors of the art inside. Hopkins arranges decorative crystal along a ledge in the kitchen to refract the light into playful prisms. Candles align with tree limbs, creating a design that melds nature and artifice.
Six small balconies create quiet nooks to commune with the outdoors. Hopkins positions a simple inexpensive chair in her favorite shade of blue in one of the home’s dramatic angles. Textures that inspire Grace’s art are visible in the contrast between the wooden boards of the deck and the pebbles below.
