Running for Town Office
Nomination papers for the spring town election are now available. Due to the pandemic, the dates for both town meeting and the election are tentative, said Town Clerk Jennifer Congel. The select board has set a tentative date of June 5 for a daytime town meeting. The town charter specifies that the election be held the following week, on June 14.
Helen Miranda Wilson’s and Justina Carlson’s three-year select board terms are expiring this year. As of Feb. 16, no one has pulled papers for these seats, Congel said.
Moderator Dan Silverman’s one-year term expires this year, and every year.
On the cemetery commission, Dave Agger’s three-year term is expiring. Both Agger and Donna Rickman have taken out papers.
Two elementary school committee positions with three-year terms, currently held by Janis Plaue and Jill Putnam, will be on the ballot.
Robert Shreefter, Heather Draz, and Eloise Greenleaf-MacLelland all have expiring positions with three-year terms on the board of library trustees.
On the housing authority, Elaine McIlroy’s and Sarah Pechukas Slivka’s terms are expiring. Congel said that, due to a recent change in the law, it is currently unclear whether one or two positions will be open.
The last day to take out papers is March 11. Due to the pandemic, the date to return papers is subject to change, said Congel, but at present the deadline for returning them to the clerk is 5 p.m. on March 15.
To request papers, or ask any questions regarding dates and open seats, e-mail Congel at [email protected] or call 508-349-0301. Congel said to call her to arrange to meet a staff member outside town hall to pick up the papers in person.
Special Town Election
The select board voted unanimously on Feb. 9 to hold a special town election on the same day as the Nauset Regional School Committee’s district-wide vote on the high school renovation project: March 30. Voters will be asked to approve the debt exclusion for Wellfleet’s share of the project.
The last day to register to vote in these elections is March 10, by 5 p.m.
Polls will be open on March 30 at the Wellfleet Senior Center from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
A notice posted on the town website by the town clerk states that applications to request ballots will be mailed out to registered voters in the form of a postcard. If you do not receive an application, contact the town clerk.
