Covid-19 Update
As of Sept. 29, Wellfleet had one active case of Covid-19, seven cases considered recovered, and one death from the virus.
Brush Fires
Wellfleet saw two separate brush fires on the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 22.
One, at 360 Gross Hill Road, the location of an Eversource electrical substation, caused about 500 town locations to lose electricity. A 10-by-20-foot area burned, and Eversource line trucks had to de-energize the location before firefighting operations could begin.
Nine minutes after the Wellfleet Fire Dept. responded to the Gross Hill Road incident, they got reports of a second brush fire at the corner of Long Pond Road and Queen’s Way. Fire Capt. Joseph Cappello reported an area of 50 by 100 feet ablaze, and, as Pauley wrote in a press release, heavy fire traveling towards a nearby unoccupied residence.
The Eastham and Truro fire depts. each responded with an engine company, preventing the fire from spreading to homes.
At the time of his Sept. 23 press release, Pauley attributed the cause of both brush fires to high wind conditions, which, he said, “caused some type of issue with the major electrical transmission lines.” He was not available for further comment.
A resident of Old Long Pond Road told the Independent that he saw two men cutting down a tree that fell on a power line, causing “bomb-like explosions and fire” in the wires at nearly the same time as the two brush fires were reported. —Josephine de La Bruyère
